SALZBURG, AUSTRIA is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Salzburg's Old City was designated a cultural heritage site in 1997. It is the birthplace of Mozart, a city of music. Church bells peal throughout the day, the strains of symphonies fill the concert halls, organ pipes and choirs accompany Sunday mass, and folk tunes and drinking songs fill the taverns. Salzburg is also the home of the Salzburg Festival. The classic movie, The Sound of Music, was based on the life of the VonTrapp family, and many of the exteriors were shot in this city. The Festung or Hohensalzburg Fortress, the chief landmark of Mozart's city, the largest, fully-preserved fortress in central Europe was built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard. The medieval princes' apartments and the Fortress Museum are of particular interest. Our younger visitors will be royally entertained on the Knight's Adventure Playground in the outer areas of the castle. The Hohenwerfen Fortress hosts a bell tower with delightful view of the Salzach Valley and features daily falconry demonstrations. The city offers museums for all tastes, including the Burgerspital (Toy) Museum, the Monatssschlossl (Folklore) Museum in Hellbrunn Park, the Hintersee (Doll-house) Museum, and the Fortress Museum displaying weapons and armor. The Grossglockner High Alpine Road takes you to some of the world's most spectacular scenery - the Hohe tauern national park. Within a few kilometers, you travel through all climatic and vegetation zones between Austria and the Arctic: meadows, forests, alpine pastures, rocks and ice. And at the end, you come face to face with Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner (3,798 m), towering above the Pasterze glacier. The Eisriesenwelt ice caves are also nearby.
